HOW TO CARE FOR AND GET THE BEST FROM YOUR REED DIFFUSER.

 Reed Diffusers are a great way to add your favourite scents to your home without having to do much work. I like to call them my ‘always on’ fragrances, as you don’t need to light them in order to smell them (in fact, please NEVER light them!). But despite being relatively low maintenance, here are a few tips to get the best out of your diffuser, as well as a few tips on how to care for them, but first, a little bit more about these ‘always on’ fragrances…

What is a reed diffuser and how do they work?

A reed diffuser is essentially a mixture of fragrance oil and a base liquid – together these are both volatile, meaning that they readily vaporise. As an example, if you mixed fragrance oil with normal household coconut oil, you won’t be able to achieve a decent scent throw, if any, as coconut oil not is not volatile and cannot vaporize. The reeds used in a diffuser are the engine of the product, and what we use to help deliver that gorgeous fragrance. The liquid and fragrance soaks into the reeds, which is then dispersed into the air. Poor quality reeds can easily get clogged, limiting the scent throw, so always be sure to buy quality products to avoid wasting your money.

How to get the most out of your diffuser:

Consider placement:

Where you set your reed diffuser will also affect how well the scent is dispersed. High traffic areas are the perfect places for your diffuser, as the constant flow of air helps to diffuse the fragrance. In the same way, setting them lower, as opposed to higher (such as on a high shelf in the corner of a room) will also help keep the fragrance moving. However, try keeping them away from open windows or fans, as this type of air flow will use up more fragrance than necessary.

Consider temperature:

Fragrance loves warmth as subtle heat helps to develop and move fragrance. During colder months you may notice that your diffuser isn’t as strong as in the warmer months (unless your heating is on), so placing your diffuser in warmer areas or areas that get sunlight well help increase your scent throw. Be mindful not to place your diffuser above radiators or on radiator covers, as the increased heat will distribute the fragrance more readily, using up more fragrance. Personally, I do do this, as I love the stronger throw during the cold, winter months – but at the same time, I’m not too fussed on trying to make my diffuser last longer, as I’m more for the experience.

How to care for your diffuser:

Gentle maintenance: While reed diffusers require significantly less maintenance than candles (there’s no wicks to trim or hours to count), they do still need a bit of care every now and then. As the reeds are the engine to fragrance dispersion, giving them a flip every now and again will help to revive your fragrance. Try not to flip your reeds more than every two weeks, as this will use up extra oil.  

Troubleshooting your diffuser:

My reed diffuser is still relatively full, but the scent throw isn’t as strong as it used to be, what can I do?

This is when a little bit of maintenance is needed. Firstly, give the bottle a gentle, level swirl – and be careful not to create any spillage as this may damage surfaces. This little swirling action will help to blend the fragrance back with the base liquid in case of any minor separation. Next, flip the reeds as this will revive the diffusion process.

 

If all else fails, it may be time to replace the reeds. Often, particularly in warmer months when more doors and windows are open, excess dust can clog the reeds, killing the engine of your product.

My reed diffuser is not strong enough to fill my room with scent, does this mean it’s bad quality?

Sometimes this can signal poor quality, and particularly when you are paying very low prices for your product. If you have purchased a reed diffuser from us, the answer is a resounding no! As we only use high quality raw materials, a quick fix to this is down to the reeds. As we cannot predict the size of every customer’s room and craft a product to suit this, we work and develop according to the size of an average English home. If your room is larger than the average, or open plan, simply adding additional reeds to your diffuser will help to diffuse more fragrance into your space, making the scent stronger, and filling more of your room.

My reed diffuser is too strong, what can I do?

If you are finding that your diffuser is a bit too strong for your liking, solving this is pretty easy. Simply remove a few of the reeds – this will diffuse less scent and therefore make the fragrance more subtle. As a start, remove 1 or 2 reeds at a time, until you have found your perfect balance. Any reeds that you remove will need to be discarded immediately, as placing them on some surfaces may damage them.

General safety for using reed diffusers:

NEVER place your diffuser within reach of children or pets.

Do not ingest the liquid, this is toxic.

Do not light the reeds and keep away from open flames. Reed diffusers may be flammable.

Diffuser liquid may damage some surfaces. Ensure that you wipe any residual oil from the bottom of the bottle before placing it on a protected, level surface. Also ensure that reeds are not in contact with walls and curtains.

When flipping your reeds, wear gloves or wrap reeds in folded tissue before handling, as to avoid contact with your skin. Some mixtures may cause an allergic skin reaction. In the event of skin or eye contact, rinse thoroughly with water. If skin irritation occurs seek medical advice/attention.
